Power Line Carrier systems are used for the transmission of vital information for the operation and protection of the electric power grid.

Power Line Carrier (PLC) solutions are in some countries used for the transmission of speech signals, data and protection commands over high-voltage transmission lines. After a long time of analog modulation techniques the digital modulation techniques are introduced in PLC. Advanced multicarrier modulation and digital signal processing techniques are implemented to withstand electromagnetic disturbances specific to the high-voltage power lines.

The IEC 60495 series is often a required standard series for performing a type test on power line carrier terminals. For PLC coupling devices IEC 60481 is most applicable.
