Leveraging IEC 61850 communication protocols for substation automation

Insight and training on IEC 61850

KEMA, IEC 61850 communication protocol training, substation automation

Power system protection—along with substation instrumentation, controls and automation—is becoming an ever more important issue for utilities. Using IEC 61850 data communication standards offers operational and cost advantages.  KEMA helps utilities understand how these advantages enhance substation design and overall system performance.

KEMA’s IEC 61850 training course

September 29, 2010 – Raleigh, NC USA

The IEC 61850 standard applies to data communication between metering, protection, control, transformers, and switching devices within and between substations. Realizing the significant benefits of this standard involves an approach different from that used for vendor-specific solutions.

Developed based on KEMA’s proven industry experience in system protection, control, and automation, our one-day course offers insight into the functionality and features of IEC 61850 and the configuration language needed to ensure devices and the substation automation equipment “talk” to each other as efficiently as possible.

Designed for utility managers, engineers, and technicians responsible for defining communication requirements, attendees are presented with an unbiased view of the scope, objective, capabilities, application, and benefits of IEC 61850 standards. In addition, the course provides a basis for discussing IEC 61850 with suppliers, consultants, and other parties, and how it can be applied to your organization. Recent developments, practical experiences, pitfalls, and guidelines are included, as along with an overview of the steps critical to a successful implementation.
