Discharge Modeling

KEMA's discharge modeling services include a 3D modeling of the cooling water discharge plume

Temperature effects of the discharge of cooling water
The discharge of heated cooling water affects the environment by raising the water temperature. Environmental legislation is strict on this point, which means that the license to operate during summer periods could be a limiting factor. Could be; but KEMA offers the service of a 3D modeling of the cooling water discharge plume, drawing a realistic picture of the mixing zone and raise of temperature. Tidal currents, 'natural' thermal stratification and salinity gradients are taken into account. Modeling of numerous sites shows that the ‘cooling space’ is larger than one assumes. Often the tool is also been used in site selection studies for power plants and environmental impact assessments for the construction of new plants or upgrading existing plants. Where required, the model can be supported by own measured water temperatures at different depths and distances from the discharge point in the obtained discharge/modeling area.
