Creep strain monitoring of critical high-energy parts
KEMA performs non-destructive in-service creep strain monitoring by speckle image correlation analysis (SPICA)
Parts such as high-temperature / high-pressure (e.g. high-energy) piping can be loaded by creep or other phenomena causing strain. Being able to predict the remaining lifetime of such component is obviously rewarding. Replacement/repair can be postponed or avoided and maintenance can be planned well in advance. SPICA, KEMA’s system for optical strain measurement, provides the tool to monitor strain of critical high-energy parts. SPICA can be utilized on-stream, through openings in the insulation. The long-term results of 15 years experience have convinced Dutch authorities to adopt the method for creep damage strain measurement as a superior alternative to several other on-stream/on-line strain measurement techniques.
Since 2005, SPICA receptical discs have been installed on numerous locations at more that 15 gas and coal-fired power plants, monitoring safe operations of over 5,000 MW electric power output!
