Asset Management

Balancing performance, cost and risk for sustainable energy systems

reliability asset management

Managing generation and T&D assets for improved reliability has become an increasingly critical issue – driven by pressure to improve service, regulatory demands, continuously aging assets, and the pressure to reduce costs.

The challenge is maximizing use and performance of energy infrastructure assets while also ensuring quality and reliability.

Successful asset management requires identifying appropriate targets and making resource and equipment decisions based on in-depth analysis and evaluation of asset-level data. And asset-level decisions need to be made in alignment with corporate business objectives -- balancing performance, cost, and risk.

Comprehensive insight into balancing technical and business challenges

Effective asset management requires a comprehensive understanding of both the technical and the business challenges utilities face.

KEMA approaches asset management from both a business and technical perspective that links corporate objectives and utilities' operational objectives with customer expectations, regulatory requirements, financial objectives and other stakeholder goals.

Our systematic consulting methodology includes:

  • developing an in-depth understanding of client business goals and asset base

  • analyzing and ranking alternative measures

  • developing an implementation plan to achieve maximum benefits from your existing infrastructure components and overall system.

Optimizing return on investments for greatest stakeholder value

With over 80 years as an independent, unbiased strategic partner to the energy and utility industry, we help clients manage assets for performance, costs and risk mitigation and achieve the greatest possible return on investments.

We approach asset management both an engineering and management perspective to the issues affecting asset optimization—addressing the full life-cycle of infrastructure assets. The result is that investment decisions will now deliver the greatest stakeholder value from the available budgets.

Our approach has proven to be effective to help our clients:

  • identify efficiency gains

  • reduce spending

  • improve maintenance programs and replacement strategies

  • extend asset life

  • manage risks across the company at various levels of detail

  • provide transparent expenditure justification required by the regulator.

Specifications for rotating electrical machines

As rotating electrical machines such as generators and motors are devices that transform mechanical power into electrical power and vice-versa, they play a fundamental role in asset management. KEMA has composed two standardized specifications for rotating electrical machines to be used in power stations, the S13/S14 and S17 specifications.
The S13/S14 KEMA specifications are specifically for hydrogen, liquid and air-cooled, synchronous a.c. generators with rated voltage 5 kV and above, whilst the S17 KEMA specifications are designed for electric motors.

These specifications can be obtained by sending an email.

Adequate condition assessment and monitoring of T&D equipment enables you to determine effective strategies and procedures

Condition Assessment
Condition Assessment

Condition assessment can be defined as the translation from data (O&M, diagnostics, inspections, failures) to information regarding the current and possible future condition relevant to these issues.

Condition Scan
Condition Scan

For a fast and reliable condition assessment of your HV and MV installations KEMA has developed the so called condition scan.

Diagnostic Systems
Diagnostic Systems

The dielectric condition of power equipment like power transformers, cable terminations, HV, and switchgear can be satisfactorily diagnosed by means of PD measurements.

Power Transformer Oil Analyses
Power Transformer Oil Analyses

KEMA’s monitoring activities include the physical and chemical analysis of transformer oil.

High-voltage Circuit Breaker Diagnostics
High-voltage Circuit Breaker Diagnostics

HV circuit breakers play a crucial role in the distribution of electric energy.

Infrared Thermal Imaging
Infrared Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging uses Infrared (IR) radiation generated from a material with a certain temperature. From this radiation an indication of a surface temperature can be obtained.

Power Failure Investigation
Power Failure Investigation

In the event of a fault, the asset manager needs an investigation started immediately.

On-site, Off-line Power Cable Diagnostics
On-site, Off-line Power Cable Diagnostics

Power cable diagnostics is an important tool for the asset managers to answer questions like: "What to do now, what in the short term and what on the long term?"
