The proper interference-free operation of electronics in cars is vitally important and could literally be a matter or life or death. So it’s of the utmost importance for both the automobilist and the manufacturer that various pieces of equipment operate without causing mutual interference. And naturally they have to be impervious to external interference. You must be able to demonstrate the proper operation of your equipment before you may carry the E4 symbol on your products with.
The regulations for electrical or electronic components that are installed in or on vehicles have been substantially modified since October 2002. EMC tests for crucial automobile components like airbags and ABS are already common within the EU. But now other electronics such as ornamental lights and in-car entertainment must also comply with the EMC criteria stipulated by the Automotive Directive.
KEMA can determine in its laboratories whether or not your products conform to the Automotive Directive. If your products do not cause too much interference and are sufficiently immune to interference if such occasions arise, then you will be issued an E4 Certificate. Because the RDW (Dutch Road Transport Directorate) has accepted KEMA as a “Technical Department,” KEMA’s results are adopted without any difficulty as part of the RDW’s E4 certification. And if you wish, KEMA can help you with the preparation for admission and certification via the RDW. As soon as the RDW has issued the E4 Certificate, your product is freely marketable throughout the European Union.
