From July 1st 2006, lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) can no longer be used in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS Directive). From the outside you really can’t see what substances are used in a specific material. How can you, as manufacturer or dealer, demonstrate that your product complies with the RoHS Directive? And how do you avoid having to make major and expensive modifications to your product afterwards? In cooperation with you, KEMA can determine whether your products comply with the ‘Restriction on Hazardous Substances’ Directive, or RoHS for short. You send your product to us along with a materials list and a declaration concerning the components used (the so-called homogeneous materials). We then carry out a thorough risk analysis to determine whether there may be any ‘suspect substances’ present. Using the results of this investigation we formulate a minimal test program. The test program starts with so-called XRF measurements. Using these measurements it is possible – within certain margins – to determine whether or not a specific suspect substance is present in the material and, if so, how much. You receive a clearly written test report and if the tested materials comply with the RoHS Directive, you then receive a KEMA Attestation of Conformity. This Attestation of Conformity confirms that the homogeneous materials tested, as determined from the risk analysis, comply with the RoHS Directive. If it is not possible to determine whether this material complies with the RoHS Directive, further chemical tests are required, for which a separate test program must be set up. Why KEMA? - We can help you with a tailor-made inspection of your existing products.
- The preliminary risk analysis ensures that we do as few, but also as many, tests as necessary to determine whether your product complies with the directive. This makes the inspection quicker and reduces your costs.
- Even while your product is in the development phase, KEMA can support you regarding the materials to be used and test the components for you.
- You products can be tested in either The Netherlands or in China.
- If you wish, we can perform an XRF measurement on every material and on each part of your product.
KEMA is flexible and adapts its processes to your operations as much as possible. Quite often our engineers speak your language and there is usually a KEMA office near you. For more information about RoHs testing, contact us.
