IEEE Power Engineering Society recognizes Ralph Masiello for industry leadership, innovation
BURLINGTON, Mass. (July 29, 2009) – The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Energy Society (PES) has awarded KEMA senior vice president and global innovation manager Dr. Ralph Masiello the 2009 Charles Concordia Power System Engineering Award. Masiello has been recognized for his extraordinary vision, broad perspective and compelling innovation to the enhancement of bulk power systems.
IEEE PES confers this annual honor to an individual who has demonstrated professional leadership, shown proven accomplishments, contributed industry leading innovations, and devoted their career to bulk power system engineering. The award is named after Charles Concordia, who had made extraordinary contributions to the technical advancements of power system dynamics during the 20th century.
“The electric utility industry and its customers require the integration of complex technical capabilities into unique solutions capable of addressing the business concerns,” said Hugo van Nispen, president and managing director of KEMA, Inc. “Ralph’s diverse work experience has given him a rich understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the electric power industry and unique insights into solutions to address them. He is tireless in his advocacy of, and passion for, the electric industry. His personal commitment and tremendous integrity has helped lead KEMA in developing innovative global solutions.”
Based in KEMA’s Chalfont, Pennsylvania office, Masiello joined KEMA in 2003 as a senior vice president in the power system planning and management consulting practice. He has implemented technologies and risk management strategies for transmission and market operators, and his contributions have led to the growth of smart grid and automation roadmaps for several US independent service operators.
Masiello is responsible for innovation management practices that assist utilities and energy infrastructure suppliers in research and development activities. His recent focus is on the application of smart grid and electricity storage technologies to system operations, and the integration of electric vehicles with grid operations and markets. Masiello is a Fellow of the IEEE and board member of the GridWise Alliance and serves on the US Department of Energy, Electricity Advisory Council. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in electrical engineering.
The IEEE presented Masiello with the Charles Concordia Award during the Power and Energy Society’s general meeting on July 28, 2009 in Calgary, Alberta Canada.
