KEMA senior vice president elected to National Academy of Engineering

Ralph Masiello honored for contributions to secure operations of electric power grids

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected KEMA Senior Vice President and Innovation Director Ralph D. Masiello as one of 68 new members to be inducted to the Class of 2011 for distinguished contributions to engineering. Masiello has been recognized for his online analysis, operator training simulation, and modern market development for secure operation of electric power grids.

The NAE announced its new member class in a press release issued today, February 8. Masiello will attend the formal Induction Ceremony at the NAE Annual Meeting on October 16, 2011, in Washington, DC.

Masiello, who joined KEMA in January 2003, is responsible for identifying and evaluating potential new technologies and solutions for future energy systems, e.g., utility of the future, and for the development of new KEMA products and services. At present, he is especially focused on “markets 3.0” or the increased demand-side involvement in markets driven by renewable resources. He is also an expert in the application of smart grid and energy storage technologies to system operations, as well as in power system operations and control systems.

Masiello is a member of the Electricity Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). He was the recipient of the 2009 IEEE Power Engineering Society Charles Concordia Award in Power Systems Engineering. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
