High and Medium Voltage

Condition assessment

The type of cable and the nature of the most common defects within it will determine the most effective diagnostic method to apply.
Possible diagnostic methods include:
  • Dielectric spectroscopy (for water trees)
  • Leakage current detection (for contamination, large defects in paper cables systems)
  • Loss-factor measurement (for water trees and some other defects)
  • PD tests (for many different types of defects, as long as they generate partial discharges)
    o  Off-line with an 0.1 Hz source
    o  Off-line with a 50 Hz source
o  Off-line with an OWTS (Oscillating Wave Test System) source
    o  On-line

Applying an effective diagnostic method will normally result in a recommendation, for instance immediate repair, repair within one year, repeat measurement after 1-2 years, or no further action needed.
