Paper degradation

The integrity of paper insulation

Do you have paper-insulated cables and do you want to assess their reliability? Did one or more breakdowns occur and do you want to know the reason why? KEMA has investigated numerous failures in cables and accessories. So you see, this is the place to be if you want solutions to your problems.
Paper insulation is usually impregnated with oil, fat, mass or resin. There are a number of effects you may want to check on both paper and the impregnant. The most important phenomena in paper-insulated systems are: partial discharge, waxing of the impregnant, burning, intruded water. Such phenomena can also be the results of other influences such as overload, lead corrosion, expansion effects, electric field deviations in accessories, etc.
Investigations are carried out on sight or in the laboratory if microscopy is needed, or other analytical techniques. Also, techniques like DGA (dissolved gas in oil analysis) and DP (depolymerization analysis) can be part of the investigation. The reports are often used for management updates and decision-making on repair or replacement.

Benefits

The benefits are:
  • Expert opinion on cables and their accessories
  • Clarity in failure matters as a basis for decision-making
  • Insight into network condition
