Medium Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear for indoor use is typically a modular, metal-clad design. The most common components include:- Circuit breakers
- Earthing switches
- Current transformers
- Voltage transformers
- Load switches
- Ring Main Units (RMU)
In order to certify medium voltage switchgear or controlgear to IEC 62271-200 (AC Metal-Enclosed Switchgear and Controlgear), each component must first be certified to the IEC Standard applicable to that component.

Certification to IEC 62271-100 (High-voltage AC Circuit
Breakers) requires additional tests, including:- Short Time Current tests on the main and earthing
circuits
- Internal arc fault tests
The internal arc fault test may be the most demanding test
required for metal-clad switchgear. In this test, internal arcs are
initiated at specific locations inside the various switchgear
compartments. The area surrounding the switchgear is monitored
during and after each test to determine the degree of protection
that the switchgear provides to personnel and equipment in close
proximity to the switchgear. KEMA is experienced in performing internal arc fault tests and
in assessing the performance of switchgear according to the
requirements of the various accessibility types.

Our laboratories can simulate any size room, with or without a ceiling and with or without back or side-walls. Using high speed cameras and camcorders, every detail of the switchgear performance is captured. This can be provided to our clients so that an accurate assessment regarding the safety of the switchgear can be made.
