Simulating dispersed generation in grids

FleXdis

In 2008, KEMA launched a new business simulation called FleXdis. It was developed on the basis of KEMA’s experience with the existing FleXnet simulation. FleXdis gives insight into the issues that arise when a low-voltage grid operator has to accommodate a lot of dispersed generators, such as solar and micro-CHP generators, with varied energy patterns.

The simulation was developed as part of the EOS Flexible project, a joint initiative by Energy Centrum Nederland, the Technical University of Eindhoven, and KEMA. The project addressed several research topics relevant to future grids, including bi-directional flows, harmonics and stability. FleXdis was one of the project deliverables.

The FleXdis business simulation is a multi-actor, multi-role tool that provides insight into the impact of dispersed generation on distribution systems. It deals with the technical and economic effects using scenarios and game scripts. In addition to being easy to moderate, it is flexible in terms of set-up and options. FleXdis can be customized to suit different situations, and it is extendable, user friendly and robust. It also offers ample scope for learning.

Benefits
The business simulation teaches participants about the following
Unbalance
> Too much generation leads to grid problems
> Too much demand leads to grid problems
> Increasing home generation may lead to lack of income for the grid operator
Uncertainty
> Early investment may lead to asset stranding
> The effect of new technologies is not fully understood
> Power generation is variable (within limits)
Interdependence
> Problems induced by one home owner may affect neighbors
> It is not (yet) possible for one grid operator to assist another
