Additional standards for lighting

Specific standards apply for all lighting that is sold inEurope. For manufacturers who produce or supply mains socket-outlet mounted nightlights, in-built ground spotlights, pre-switching equipment for electronic gas discharge lamps or LED drivers, additional standards that are applicable for their products have recently been published.

Mains socket-outlet mounted nightlights are nightlights with a fixed, integrated mains socket-outlet that can be plugged into the mains socket as a complete unit. The additional requirements of EN 60598-2-12 are focused among other things on the mechanical strength of the whole fitting, the degree of attractiveness for children of the lamp as a whole (so that they are not inclined to play with it) and specific requirements concerning the mains socket-outlet. New certificates are already being issued for this standard, existing certificates must comply with the new standard by the 1st April 2009 at the latest.

In-built ground spotlights
Specific requirements for ground spotlights are included in EN 60598-2-13. The certificates for these products must comply with the new standard by the 1st July 2009 at the latest. Among other things, this standard specifies extra requirements for the watertightness of the fixtures because these are frequently positioned outside and can therefore be under water. In addition, they must comply with strict requirements for mechanical strength. For example, freight vehicles can drive over them and then a spotlight cannot become defective or unsafe.

Gas discharge lamps
Gas discharge lamps (differently to fluorescence) are used in several applications such as street lighting and industrial lighting. The extra safety requirements for the electronic pre-switching equipment with which these lamps are controlled are specified in EN 61347-2-12. This standard, which is not intended for the fixtures themselves but it is intended specifically for pre-switching equipment, specifies for example extra requirements for the high ignition voltages that can appear. The latest date when products must comply with this standard is the 1st October 2008.

LED drivers
LED lighting, like gas discharge lamps, is also controlled by a pre-switching equipment. These pre-switching equipments are known as LED drivers and the safety requirements for these are specified in the new EN 61347-2-13 standard. This standard focuses in particular on the electronics used. Products that fall under this standard must comply with the requirements specified therein by 1st July 2009 at the latest.
