Additional requirements child-appealing luminaries

Since May 2006, a regulation has been in force for the Belgian market in which the additional requirements for child-appealing luminaries – specified in the IEC/EN 60598-2-10 standard – are declared to also be applicable for seasonal portable decorative lighting fixtures. With this, Belgium deviates from the European standard.

If you import or sell lighting fixtures in Belgium, then it is important that your products – other than with the European standard – comply with these extra requirements. KEMA has developed a free risk inventory that you can complete yourself to decide whether your product can be considered to be ‘child-appealing’. This risk inventory is currently being evaluated by the Belgian government. A guarantee for the admittance of your products to the Belgian market, however, cannot be given.

Belgium unique

In Europe, the IEC/EN60598 standard applies for lighting fixtures. This standard contains general safety requirements, tests (IEC/EN 60598-1) and additional safety requirements (IEC/EN 60598-2-xx). The additional requirements depend on the use of the lighting fixture. For lighting fixtures for children, the additional requirements as specified in the IEC/EN60598-2-10 standard apply. Belgium is the only country in Europe that has declared that this standard is applicable for decorative seasonal lighting.
