South-Korean KEPCO and KEMA sign agreement

KEMA called in for expertise in high-voltage testing

KEPRI (Korean Electric Power Research Institute), which is owned by South-Korea’s national electricity company, KEPCO, has asked for KEMA’s support with the development and use of its test locations. The aim of the collaboration is the exchange of knowledge and experience in a number of fields, including the testing of cables in South-Korea. The two companies have now formalized their relationship by signing a memorandum of understanding.

Test facility
KEPRI has a facility in Gochang for the testing of materials intended for use in the T&D infrastructure, with particular emphasis on transmission. Korea has for several years been creating transmission links with voltages as high as 800 kV. To support these projects, the research institute has a site for testing high-voltage components, superconductive materials and – when prequalification testing is introduced – cables.

Expertise
KEPRI wants an expert partner with whom knowledge and experience in the field of electrical transmission system research and testing can be exchanged. The Gochang facility is earmarked for use in the context of the planned collaboration. KEMA is interested in the venture because it would provide a foothold in Asia, as an important step towards establishing a local presence for its Asian clients; there are not many places around the world where prolonged cable testing is possible. Local manufacturers that already use KEMA’s services are keen to see the project prosper.
