KEMA analyzes financial feasibility of smart meters in Flanders

KEMA has been commissioned by VREG, the Flemish Regulator for the Electricity and Gas market, to carry out a cost-benefit analysis of the financial feasibility of the introduction of smart meters in Flanders, Belgium.

The objective of the analysis was to gain a clear understanding of the costs and benefits of a large scale introduction in Flanders of a smart meters infrastructure for gas and electricity consumption. In cooperation with the most important market players, a number of potential scenarios for the introduction of smart meters was analyzed using a financial model which KEMA has developed, especially for this objective. This model can be used to direct and objectivize the discussion on smart meters.

Flexible model
The model is sufficiently flexible to incorporate other costs and benefits or to vary parameters for the purpose of policy counsels. VREG will use the model as an instrument to give advice and to provide a solid basis for decisions on the introduction of smart meters in the future. The results of the study can be found on the website of VREG (www.vreg.be).
