Commencement of building of the new High Voltage Laboratory

On the 19th of October 2007 a contract was signed with Bruil Bouw whose job it will be to build KEMA’s new high voltage laboratory. This new laboratory distinguishes itself with its many testing facilities and increased flexibility. Before the end of the year the first foundation stone will be laid.

The existing high voltage laboratory dates from 1927. Although this lab continues to perform satisfactorily, it no longer sufficiently fulfils the demands of today’s market. Therefore the decision was made to construct a completely new facility neighboring the KEMA High Power Laboratory. This site will have the dimensions of approximately a football field with its highest point reaching 18 meters. The height is determined according to the voltage levels needed for testing.
The laboratory consists of a large steel construction whose special design will function according to the principles of the Cage of Faraday. The hall is divided into three compartments with individual heights:  for medium voltage, high voltage and ultra high voltage.
Because test equipment will not be anchored to one location within the hall, the possibility for testing becomes much more flexible. Throughout the design, consideration was taken regarding transit logistics so that clients receive a fast and optimal service. Thanks to the close proximity of the high power laboratory, clients can benefit from having both laboratories at just a stone throw away and can therefore make use of each simultaneously.
