Controlling value chain risks
On 20 January 2005, KEMA has opened a third Chinese testing and certification laboratory for low-voltage products in Shanghai. KEMA has for years been helping Chinese manufacturers and European importers to access the EU and North American markets. KEMA’s support has also been invaluable to many European manufacturers needing to comply with China’s compulsory CCC-marking system in order to market products in the People’s Republic. Around a hundred people now work at KEMA’s three labs and one inspection office (in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Whenzhou and Hong Kong). ‘As globalization continues, product safety is an increasingly important issue. China is a major player, both as a manufacturer and as a market. Over the coming fifteen years, China will be making about half the world’s electronic goods. Although many Asian manufacturers are working hard to raise quality levels, not all yet meet the requirements necessary for access to European and other markets’, says CEO Pier Nabuurs. KEMA knows all there is to know about (electrical) product safety, international standards and risk management along the entire supply chain. KEMA not only tests products, but also inspects factories and consignments awaiting shipment at the docks. The company is equally at home with consumer products such as Christmas lights, clothes irons and audio/video equipment, and with industrial products, such as residual current circuit breakers, IT equipment and lighting. The new lab is opened by the Netherlands’ Minister of Foreign Trade, Karien van Gennip. The festivities include a traditional Chinese ceremony, with a lion dance and music. A variety of presentations and workshops are also being organized for manufacturers and retailers.
