European electricity road map

The European Union and the European power industry want a road map for future power providers. KEMA is responsible for constructing a database of all of the R&D efforts of the past twenty years, making it available for a broad audience.

The two-year ‘Electricity Road Map in Europe’ (ERMInE) project was started in January. The project is actually a continuation of the Dutch Road Map for Electricity from 2002. KEMA was the responsible body for this project.
The goal of the ERMInE project is to gain an overview of R&D in the electricity sector within the member states. Furthermore, the purpose is to trace the R&D needs of power producers, network centers, and providers for the next 20 to 25 years. This will offer a clear overview of fruitful alliances and necessary R&D activities. The Italian company CESI functions as the coordinator.

Database
KEMA has been asked to chart all R&D efforts of the past 20 years. Not only just those from the European Union itself, but also from the national governments, the power companies, the large industries, as well as educational and research institutions. It involves the description of the contents of the research as well as its financing. All of these data will be entered into a database that will be accessible to a broad audience. Visitors can perform all sorts of analyses with this database.

Production technology
Under the leadership of the Italian company Enel, the partners are also developing a road map. They will sketch out a prognosis for nine technologies for power producers, transport & distribution, and end-users for the coming 20 to 25 years. This prognosis indicates which technologies will develop autonomously, and which will need extra financial assistance.
During four workshops geographically dispersed across Europe, other parties will have the opportunity to examine the findings from their own perspectives. KEMA will carry out the reporting. The results will be presented at the end of 2007 during an international conference.
