High-temperature superconducting and energy storage

Development of an innovative new high temperature “Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage System” (SEMS) for “High Efficient Power Quality” (HIPOLITY)
The objective of HIPOLITY is the development of an advanced High Temperature Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system. Through the development of such a system, it will be possible to guarantee the supply of electricity at peak times, or at the event of a voltage dip for large, high-speed continuous processes, industrial customers such as paper, plastics, chemicals, aluminum and semiconductor fabrication.
The prime industrial/economic goals are to provide a storage capacity of more than 2 MJ in the near future, to guarantee a system efficiency above 85%, to reduce costs of a SMES by 30%, to develop improved high temperature superconducting wires and an improved power electronics system.
The social objectives are to significantly improve power quality, reduce costs of non delivered energy, avoid dangers of electricity failure for the health, improve working conditions and skill level of workers.
For more information: download the project fact sheet below or contact us.
At this moment KEMA is involved in the following high-temperature superconducting and energy storage projects:
  • Grid control with the use of a High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (Grid-Con)
  • Small scale electricity storage systems - third generation Redox Flow System
  • Compact high temperature superconductor hydro power generator (HYDROGENIE).
