Reliability

Today’s changing electricity supply markets require utility executives, asset managers, grid and system operators, regulators and government to enhance their coordination of financial decisions and reliability. Widespread blackouts are costly to the supplier and to their consumers. They disrupt commerce and the highly 'digital' economy. They shut down critical infrastructure including traffic, communications and water supplies and they threaten health and safety.

Effective managing
All power systems, regardless of the operator, incur faults or external incidents. The system's design and redundancy influences the extent to which customers and dependent production processes are affected by outage events. Effectively managing, planning and implementing reliability-enhancing technology, assets and investments is key to addressing critical faults and power quality issues in a timely manner and to preventing future risk.

Reliability is often described by means of the expected outages in the long term, in terms of frequency, duration, energy not delivered etc.. Sometimes the underlying probability distribution function is needed as well. Not only outages can affect the customer, poor power quality (e.g. voltage dips) can also cause substantial problems.

Optimal decisions
Using costs for the power system and customers’ outage costs related to non-quality, the optimal design requires balancing both technical and financial dimensions. Based on historic fault data and the present or future power system design, KEMA determines  the reliability, availability and power quality and translates this into optimal decisions.

Our reliability analysis and consulting services lead to:

  • better systems designs and optimal maintenance or replacement strategies for grid operators
  • cost-efficient service level agreements for industries and other customers
  • transparency and robust regulation for government and regulators.

Our service projects include:

  • reliability analysis of the 50 kV and 150 kV power supply system REMU
  • availability of the power supply system in the Netherlands; report for systems from 0.4 to 380 kV
  • reliability analysis of the protection scheme of a 90 kV power supply system
