Power Quality and Harmonics

The increasing use of equipment with non-linear voltage-current characteristics can raise concerns or problems in power quality delivery, including phenomena as defined in EN 50160:

  • voltage fluctuation (flicker)
  • voltage unbalance
  • voltage sags or dips
  • transient overvoltage
  • harmonics and interharmonics

KEMA intends to provide effective solutions to power quality and harmonics challenges before they become a problem for network operators and consumers.

Our services include:

  • performing studies and analyses of new installations according to standards
  • measuring and assessing power quality problems
  • providing solutions and minimizing power quality problems in compliance with international protocols and standards
  • testing and calibration of PQ monitors
  • designing monitoring systems and selecting fitting measurement systems
  • assisting clients with product design
  • selecting power quality solutions
  • providing professional training courses

Examples of our consultancy projects are:

  • the Dutch power quality monitoring project
  • measuring harmonics through voltage transformers in HV systems
  • harmonic Interaction between Large Numbers of Photovoltaic Inverters and the LV Network
  • energy-efficient industrial transformers
  • assessment of harmonic emission and voltage quality for 6 types of traction substations
