Electrical and Magnetic Fields from HV-Lines

Can living and working in the vicinity of high-voltage lines, electrical cables, transformer houses or electrical devices pose health risks for my health or that of my children?
This is a question that is asked ever more frequently: more and more people are concerned about this. This question has already been investigated extensively. In some investigations indications have been found that living near high-voltage lines may lead to a higher chance of leukemia in children. This would be caused by the magnetic fields from the high-voltage lines. Precautionary measure
At the beginning of October 2005, Dutch Secretary of State Van Geel presented a recommendation concerning high-voltage lines to municipalities, provinces and electricity companies. A short summary of this recommendation: as a precautionary measure, avoid to the extent possible new situations in which children receive long-term exposure to areas near above-ground high-voltage lines where the magnetic field is stronger than 0.4 microTesla (the specific magnetic field zone). Attachments to this recommendation include a glossary and an aid for calculating the specific magnetic field zone. How can KEMA help you? KEMA has extensive experience in:- the measurement of electrical and magnetic fields in residential and work environments;
- the calculation of electrical and magnetic fields (in accordance with the aid included with the new recommendation from the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment)
- providing information about the health-related effects of electrical and magnetic fields
- working out alternatives and practical solutions for high-voltage lines, in which the magnetic field zone is reduced in size.
KEMA has a helpdesk that can provide answers to your questions concerning electrical and magnetic fields by telephone or e-mail. For more information, please contact us.
