Energy supply concepts

An integral approach of the energy structure

Ten percent sustainable in 2020. This is one of the primary goals of the Dutch government’s energy policy. Simple solutions are generally inadequate to reach this goal in an economically responsible manner. It is wiser to start from an integral concept per regionresidential areaindustrial estate or building. At this level it’s the energy demand (hot water, heating for a building, light, power etc.) and the sources available locally (all possible sources, both fuels and renewable sources) that determine what the total picture may look like. KEMA supports local and regional government, energy companies and private parties in the development of such a concept. This concerns advice at the interface of policy, technology and economics, considering also the opportunities of the liberalized energy market.
An integral approach of the energy structure brings new solutions into view: new ways of reducing energy demand, optimum utilization of renewable sources and better utilization of conventional sources. Thorough policy preparation and implementation (by means of well-balanced determination of the ambition level and performance of concept studies and feasibility studies) moreover leads to a properly balanced energy concept that is broadly supported by all parties involved.
Practice shows that this approach results in savings of 10 to 20 percent or more, for instance because there is no longer any need to use high-grade energy for relatively low-temperature heating purposes. Or because cascading opportunities are used. This means that eventually sustainable options will also fit better into the local situation.
