Spontaneous heating of biomass

Introduction, publications

Spontaneous heating of biomass

When storing large amounts of biomass, either of vegetable or animal origin, there is a serious threat of oxidative self-heating (spontaneous heating) of the material stored.
Through desk studies, experimental work and real life data collection, KEMA has gained substantial knowledge and experience regarding the process of self-heating, the influence of material properties and storage conditions as well as the possibilities to avoid or control this phenomenon.
KEMA is very active and is expanding its activities relating to this topic.

Spontaneous combustion reactor

KEMA possesses an adiabatic test reactor – with a height of 2 meters and an internal diameter of 0.5 meter - in which heat development within a fuel storage can be simulated and monitored.
Parameters that can be varied and investigated are:
  • fuel type
  • moisture content
  • particle size
  • storage density
  • amount and type of ventilation in the storage

During this process the temperature (at different positions in the storage), the pressure drop and the composition of the outlet gas are constantly monitored.
