Research & Development
Through its extensive R&D programs - among others for the Dutch Utilities - KEMA has gained wide experience with and profound insight into both short and long-term operational solutions and applications. Our broad knowledge of and experience with bio-energy and co-combustion R&D enables us to both recognize and create new or better business opportunities for our clients. Conscious R&D provides a secure basis for any new development or the start of a new business. Not only technical specifications and details but also economic consequences, the public perception and the (future) clients’ demands play an important role in this early stage of a new business. KEMA addresses all these issues. Through its own pilot plants and experimental facilities (testing facilities) and its involvement in many pilot and commercial-scale trials KEMA has gained enormous experience in executing R&D programs in the field of bio-energy-related projects. Practical data is gathered and incorporated by KEMA into user-friendly models and expert systems (models and tools) for optimal use by our clients. This enables you to gain an edge on the competition in an early stage of your development program through independent, experienced advice by the KEMA consultants and engineers. Your idea or (operational) problem will be translated into a concrete test or R&D program focused on a concrete application or solution, presented in a clear report, model or advice.

Co-combustion of biomass
In performing and evaluating practical test trials KEMA has gathered a great deal of practical knowledge, not only on the technical and economic aspects of (in)direct co-firing of secondary fuels, but also - through desk studies - on many related issues, such as: Life Cycle Analyses (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost management (LCCM) studies of different thermal conversion routes, including:- a databank on the composition of the fuels
- the ignition and combustion characteristics
- the effect of co-combustion on the composition and quality of the fly-ashes and the emissions into the air and waste water
- the potential dangers of increased corrosion and fouling and slagging in boilers and downstream equipment
- the fate of the trace elements (Hg !)
- the impact of and consequences for the required fuel gas treatment system
- pre-treatment of fuels
- occupational health and safety aspects in handling secondary fuels and
- drawing up environmental impact assessments and permit applications.

Co-combustion properties
During the past decade at the KEMA facilities and during large-scale test trials a lot of data has been gathered on the combustion properties and behavior of a wide variety of biomass and waste fuels. Among other things these data have been applied for validating the KEMA models. Issues regarding combustion properties that are addressed in KEMA’s R&D work include:- reactivity
- drying and milling requirements
- ignition behavior
- burn-out
- ash properties
- melting behavior
- fouling propensity

NOx measures
Legislation on NOx emission will change rapidly in the coming years. European legislation, Dutch legislation and the NOx emission trade will be implemented. Furthermore, the benchmark agreement and the coal covenant will have their effects. Therefore, more than ever there are economic consequences connected to the application of NOx emission reduction techniques, and biomass co-firing offers both opportunities to comply with legislation and restrictions in reducing the costs of NOx measures. KEMA has extensive experience in reducing the costs of applying NOx reduction techniques. Projects have been executed or are underway on:- The implementation of primary and secondary NOx reduction measures
- The effect of co-firing secondary fuels on the SCR unit
- The effect of the biomass or biofuel properties on NOx emissions
- Optimization of the SCR unit (NOxEye)
- Quality control of SCR DeNOx catalysts
- Least-cost planning of NOx reduction measures (EcoNOx)
- BioDeNOx as a secondary reduction measure
- NOx emission reduction for gas engines
- Reducing uncertainties in NOx measurements.
