Operations support
Owners of existing production facilities have to adapt to changing markets and technical innovations. There is a constant need to optimize operations by e.g. increasing energy efficiency, processing different feedstock, increasing plant throughput and improvement or diversification of product quality. Your benefits:- Minimization of staff for operational support
- Access to expertise gained from broad industrial experience.

Consultancy, inspections and maintenance
KEMA has qualified consultants and engineers who understand your processes and markets and can assist you either on site or by giving advice. We can analyse and benchmark your existing operations. During scheduled maintenance we can conduct inspections, such as non-destructive testing of your equipment. We can reinforce your project team with technical expertise or manage the complete project.

Large scale trial tests
KEMA has a great deal of experience in the preparation, execution and evaluation of large-scale trials with secondary fuels in commercial (600 MWe) coal-fired power plants. This comprises many different aspects, including:- Measurement scheme, test conditions
- Project instructions
- Milling, grinding, pre-treatment requirements
- Conducting the test trials
- Measuring mass balances
- Emissions, fate of trace elements
- Composition and quality of by-products
- Measuring and prediction of corrosion rates
- Performance monitoring
- Evaluation and reporting of results
- Effects on operation, optimization, risk analysis
- Relation to permits.

Co-firing of biomass
KEMA’s experiences with co-firing of secondary fuels range from test trials with (in)direct co-combustion up to 10 mass percentage at full-scale power plants to direct co-combustion up to 30 energy percentage in the 1 MWth KEMA test rig. This experience includes a wide variety of biomass and waste fuels, such as: biomass pellets, (dried) sewage sludge, (waste) wood, fluids, paper sludge, char coal, cocoa shells, wood pellets, industrial gases, meat and bone meal, chicken litter, RDF, plastics, imported fuels and olive kernels. Issues addressed in these test trials include fuel handling, grinding and drying, combustion, slagging and fouling, thermal boiler behavior, corrosion and erosion, ash quality, emissions into the atmosphere, capacity of the individual components of the installation and occupational health and safety conditions.
