Bio-energy models and tools

KEMA has available a variety of validated models, tools and software to assist its consultants and experts in different phases of a bio-energy project. These models and tools are:

BIOLOCO (source-to-energy)

Bioloco is a KEMA model dealing with the optimization of the complete source-to-energy chain with respect to logistics, availability of fuels, fuel flexibility, the effect of scale and gas cleaning.

Life cycle cost management (LCCM)

This model addresses the economics of the complete life cycle of a bio-energy power plant based upon information from manufacturers and validated technical and operating data, thus providing our clients with a clear and detailed overview of the costs involved in the bio-energy or co-combustion options they are considering. Sensitivity analyses of the most important variables are included.
KEMA has extensive experience in performing LCCM studies for biomass and waste fuels in combination with bio-energy conversion techniques. Typical examples are:
  • comparison of different gasification and (co-)combustion techniques for waste wood, sewage sludge and plastics at different unit scale sizes
  • comparing thermal conversion routes for processing of VGT in order to obtain their economic ranking in comparison with composting and digesting.

Unit operations biomass gasification

How can you quickly evaluate your complete biomass gasification chain and save money by making the right choices in the early stages of your project?
KEMA possesses a modelling tool to uniformly describe and evaluate the complete biomass gasification chain by dividing the entire process in generic, well-defined and characterized unit operations.
With the modelling tool and their practical experience KEMA consultants can assist decision-makers in the early stages of your realization project in making the right choices with regard to fuel - technology - application matching and in anticipating technical problems within a specified biomass gasification chain.
Based upon a sound database, the modeling tool offers you the following possibilities:
  • Building and managing your own biomass gasification chain
  • Optimizing fuel flexibility in the envisaged gasification chain
  • Evaluating emission levels and control measures
  • Obtaining insight into the required performance of individual unit operations
  • Defining starting points for your realization project
  • Incorporating and evaluating your own test data and/or unit operations
  • Establishing a unique and sound database.

The modeling tool allows you to quickly redefine and re-evaluate your biomass gasification chain, i.e. all elements from fuel reception to the application of the final product, including environmental and any other requirements or constraints. You can choose from a predefined set of implementations for each chain element or use the possibility to add new ones. The modeling tool examines all elements in the chain for incompatibilities compared with the other chain elements and draws up a comprehensive report of incompatibilities.
In combination with the KEMA consultants’ practical experience, this modeling tool provides you with the opportunity to redefine your gasification chain or sharpen your performance requirements for specific unit operations within the chain.
