Almost three quarters of the total greenhouse surface in Europe (94 kHa) consists of plastic foil greenhouses. Especially Spain and Italy have a dominating influence on this large share. 

By far the most important applied plastic foil as cover material for greenhouses in Europe is polythene. In the Netherlands this is the same situation.

The most important plastic foils characteristics suitable for the horticulture are:

• Light permeability
• Life time
• Strength
• Heat permeability
• Price.

Besides, anti-droplet and anti-dust behavior play an important role.

Within this project KEMA acted as an integrator between the end-user, industry and universities and controlled the process from idea until useful end-product.
