Creep strain monitoring of HT/HP parts of power plants

Parts such as high-temperature piping can be loaded by creep or other phenomena causing strain. Being able to predict the remaining lifetime of such component is obviously rewarding. Replacement/repair can be postponed or avoided and maintenance can be planned well in advance.   SPICA, KEMA’s system for optical strain measurement, provides the tool to monitor strain of critical high-pressure, high-temperature components. SPICA can be utilized on-stream, through openings in insulation. The long-term results of 15 years experience have convinced Dutch authorities to adopt the method for creep damage strain measurement as a superior alternative to several other on-stream/on-line strain measurement techniques.
Benefits:
  • Precise knowledge of remaining lifetime by Fitness-for-Purpose analysis
  • Trend measurements
  • Predictive conclusions on lifetime of gas turbine blades and effectiveness of cooling structures.

KEMCOP: a simple but effective corrosion and fouling monitoring system

Maintenance engineers are often forced to carry out drastic operations to check if corrosion plays a role in the maintenance strategy. KEMA has developed a simple but effective method for early corrosion and fouling detection of waterwalls: KEMCOPs (KEMA COrrosion Probes), installed at several locations in the strips of waterwalls in coal-fired power plants and waste incineration plants. The probes are easily accessible and can be installed and removed during operation. They give information about corrosion rates and the quality and composition of corrosion products as a result of the combustion conditions.

On-stream high temperature wall thickness measurements

Corrosion and erosion affect the wall thickness of your pipework. Regular overhauls are planned to inspect the integrity. Expensive scaffolding has to be built for locations that are difficult to access. For these locations and critical components in your system, the KEMWAT (KEMA system for on-stream wall thickness measurement) is the right solution. KEMWAT accurately measures the wall thickness at temperatures up to 550ºC.   Critical areas, which are mostly known from experience or inspections, are subject to monitoring. At the critical spot a stud is welded and an ultrasonic transducer is mounted at the free end of the stud just outside the insulation.
Your benefits and cost savings:
  • No scaffolding necessary
  • Fewer inspections
  • Higher availability
  • Input to improve maintenance planning.

Fitness-for-Purpose assessments

"Repair or replace?" A short time ago only these were the only two possibilities available for a defect pressurized component. Actually, in many cases a small defect is allowable, if the detected defect is smaller than the critical size determined by fracture mechanics. The combination of modern NDT technology, material science and fracture mechanics is the so-called Fitness-for-Purpose (FFP) approach.   Fitness for Purpose assessments deal with the decision procedure ‘run-repair-replace’ for components with defects, resulting in answers to the following questions:
  • What is the critical defect dimension in this specific situation?
  • What period of safe operation do I have left?
  • Do I have a “leak before break” (LBB) or “break before leak” situation (BBL)?
