Non-destructive testing services
The root of KEMA's NDT services is specialized non-destructive testing services for the power generating industry (conventional and nuclear). We offer a number of "special" NDT services besides standard-type NDT work. However, standard NDT is usually part of a larger scope of management-supporting activities like:- Maintenance consultancy
- Fitness-for-purpose calculations
- Corrosion management
- Life time assessment
- Performance improvement advice
- Failure analysis.
Brief descriptions of special NDT services Generator retaining ring inspection to avoid unnecessary and expensive ring replacement and rotor dismounting during plant stops. Besides the conventional multifrequency / multichannel Eddy current inspections: a number of specialized Eddy current methods to cover many types of ferritic tube and tube-to-tube sheet welds. Ultrasonic time of flight diffraction (TOFD) inspection capability to detect and size defects in all sorts of material including glass fiber reinforced plastics and concrete. Results of TOFD inspections are often linked to fitness-for-purpose calculations and lifetime assessments undertaken by other KEMA specialists. C-scanning (‘mapping’) of vessel walls is often combined with TOFD nowadays. VINSPEC is an endoscopic inspection method combined with ET probes to not just detect, but also to size and characterize indications through gas turbine inspection holes. It has been applied at generator rotors as well to evaluate flaws in windings. Coating condition monitoring (COCOM) is an application to measure the coating thickness of thermal barrier coatings and/or aluminum depletion used for life assessment of gas turbine hot gas path components. Speckle image correlation analysis (SPICA) consists of on-line creep strain monitoring of critical areas like heat-affected zones of welds in high pressure/temperature applications. High-temperature diagnostics by thermography video images are generated to monitors e.g. slagging, ignition, backfiring and flame impingement. KEMA can also provide the more standard type of testing services. However, since most of these standard tests can also be undertaken by local contractors, we strive to co-operate with local contractors of sufficient quality, where KEMA undertakes the more complex NDT services to serve our clients with an optimum price / quality ratio. The combination of NDT services by local contractors, who can react more quickly, with the experience and know-how of KEMA in the more advanced type of NDT services ensures that our clients have the optimum service level. - PT : dye penetrant technique
- VT : visual, optical techniques (incl. endoscopy, TV cameras)
- IT : infrared thermographic technique
- LT : leak testing ( several types, including Helium).
