Practical experience

KEMA has more than 15 years of experience in all aspects and phases related to the design, construction and operation of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units in different applications, including coal-fired power stations and co-firing of secondary fuels, municipal solid waste incinerators, industrial facilities and catalyst manufacturers. Our experience highlights include:
  • activity measurements and remaining lifetime calculations for SCR catalysts from power plants and municipal solid waste incinerators
  • prediction of flue gas compositions at the inlet of the SCR during co-firing of secondary fuels in coal-fired plants
  • monitoring and analyzing the effect of co-firing secondary fuels on the activity of SCR catalyst.

Technical knowledge

KEMA’s SCR experience and expertise is leveraged to help clients with a comprehensive range of SCR projects. Our consultants are up-to-date on the latest developments in SCR technology and have practical experience with SCR in a wide range of application settings. From evaluating and selecting SCR technologies to establishing design specifications, managing project bids and construction, and optimizing asset management, KEMA brings a high level of expertise to every project.
Independent Evaluation
As an independent consultant, KEMA helps clients make the right choice on primary or secondary NOx-reduction measures, or combinations of both, through our cost optimization model EcoNOx. Our analysis helps clients invest in the technically and economically optimal NOx-reduction technique specific to their NOx-issue.
Design Specifications
As a fully knowledgeable resource on SCR technology and applications, KEMA establishes SCR design specifications, taking into account the desired performance, constraints from emission legislation, process conditions, flue gas composition, flow patterns, load following behavior and fuel specifications that are typical of your installation. KEMA also advises on the chemistry involved in the SCR unit, the fuels, the flue gas composition, trace elements and fly ash present in the flue gas and their effect on SCR performance and design.
Project Management
As a fully independent participant in the SCR market, KEMA has knowledge of the industry’s suppliers and manufacturers. During the design and construction phase of an SCR unit, KEMA works with clients as an owner’s representative or an owner’s engineer - evaluating offers, selecting the right supplier and setting up contracts.
Asset Management
KEMA has developed the modeling tool NOxVision, which is used to calculate activity, lifetime, replacement strategy and design of an SCR installation. We provide both ex-situ and on-line monitoring to optimize SCR catalyst management. KEMA’s test installation provides ex-situ monitoring of the long-term performance of your SCR unit. The activity of spent SCR catalyst can be determined under well-defined and realistic conditions. KEMA also provides on-line monitoring of the activity of the overall SCR installation or the individual catalyst layers by performing single-point or grid NOx, NH3, temperature and/or velocity profiles measured in the flue gas channel.
SCR Test Facility
KEMA can determine the activity of fresh and spent SCR catalyst under well-defined and uniform conditions. Based on a pre-defined set of activity measurements KEMA will calculate a reliable and validated remaining lifetime for the catalyst’s inventory and advise you of the most advantageous order of replacing individual catalyst layers in the SCR installation.

Reliable solutions

Whether you are designing a new SCR, retrofitting existing SCR installations, replacing your SCR catalyst or deciding which and how much fuel to fire or co-fire, KEMA consultants can assist you in the complete implementation and operation of your SCR unit. KEMA’s independent advice, based upon the know-how gathered in many years of practical experience, our consultants' expertise, and results from our modeling tools NOxVision and/or EcoNOx, enables you to make the right investment decisions based upon well-founded technical and economic indicators.
