Primary NOx-reduction measures

Practical experience, technical knowledge, reliable solutions

Primary NOx-reduction measures

KEMA’s primary NOx-reduction solutions ensure the implementation of technologies that are aligned with your business needs and objectives.
Our services include:
  • assessing the potential of low NOx-combustion technology
  • managing and implementing combustion modification and optimization projects
  • optimizing the balance between primary and
    secondary NOx-reduction techniques (EcoNOx).

Your benefits are:
  • optimization of boiler operations in short-term and longer-term lifecycles
  • successful project results in line with cost, operation and business objectives
  • maximization of return on investment based on sound, unbiased analysis.

Practical experience

KEMA has over 30 years of hands-on experience in evaluating and implementing primary NOx-reduction techniques for new construction and retrofit projects. Our experience highlights include:
  • serving as an advisory body for the introduction of many low NOx-combustion techniques for coal, gas and oil fired utility boilers in the Netherlands
  • participating in test programs to assess the potential of low NOx-combustion techniques for gas turbines and combined cycles.
  • supervising combustion modification and optimization projects in Eastern Europe.

Technical knowledge

Because of our extensive practical experience, KEMA is aware of the potential and the limitations of combustion modification technology. Low-NOx-combustion techniques offer the advantage of being relatively cheap. However, many low-NOx-combustion techniques may have a negative impact on boiler operation, especially if they are too extreme. In this case the advantage of lower NOx emissions is counterbalanced by a deterioration of boiler operation, a condition that may not be apparent until after many years of operation.
KEMA is familiar with the implications of extreme low-NOx techniques, such as:
  • lower flame stability
  • loss in boiler efficiency
  • increased risk of slagging and corrosion
  • problems with fly ash quality.

Reliable solutions

With years of technical and practical experience, KEMA consultants can assist you in evaluating, designing, and implementing combustion modification techniques to meet your operational and business goals. We can help you analyze whether a primary technique will be fruitful, whether it will result in costly complications or restrictions, or if secondary techniques are preferable.
KEMA has developed reliable tools to advise on the optimum balance between primary and secondary NOx-reduction techniques. We have developed a cost optimization software program, EcoNOx, which takes into account both investment and operational costs involved in considering primary and secondary techniques. EcoNOx analysis is then utilized to advise on the cost-effectiveness of various NOx-reduction measures and on the optimum implementation strategy.
