Catalyst test facilities

Fluidized bed reactor, high pressure thermobalance, drop tube furnace, SCR and DeNOx testing facility

Catalyst test facilities

KEMA can test catalysts and absorbents in its laboratories under simulated process conditions in different reactor types or setups. The flexible testing tools can be used at high pressure and/or temperature with aggressive chemicals and corrosive gases.
At KEMA, a variety of experimental set-ups for performing gas-solid reactions on a micro to kilogram scale are available, including:

High-pressure thermobalance

The Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer (TGA) is extremely well suited to the study of the characteristic properties of solid materials, such as kinetics and adsorption and desorption phenomena associated with a catalyst or sorbent. The sample weight is continuously monitored while temperature, pressure and gas phase composition can be set and changed according to the client’s specific wishes. Fast screening of materials and parameters can be achieved. A special feature of the TGA at KEMA is its capability to operate at up to 5.0 MPa and 1100°C.

TGA applications:

  • reactivity measurements
  • adsorption and desorption capacity
  • oxidation and reduction behavior
  • kinetic gas-solid studies
  • deactivation phenomena.

High-temperature and high-pressure flow system

This experimental facility has been engineered in such a way that the flow and analysis system can be applied to different reactors, such as fixed and fluidized-bed reactor setups. This ensures a versatile setup, which can be fully optimized to the customer’s needs.
With the extensive gas mixing system, up to three different gas mixtures can be generated simultaneously for timed exposure to the sample under investigation. Besides temperature and pressure control and registration, the system is equipped with a mass spectrometer and a gas chromatograph for continuous feed and product gas analysis.

Drop tube furnace

Particles of a wide variety of materials (coal, plastic, biomass, RDF, sludge etc.) with particle diameters of up to 2 mm can be fed into the KEMA drop tube furnace (DTF). Upon introduction, these particles enter a pyrolysis, combustion or gasification environment at temperatures up to 1700°C, with heating rates of 104 -105 Kelvin per second. The residence time in this reacting environment can be varied between 0.2 and 4 seconds.
Typical applications:
  • combustion reactivity
  • char properties
  • agglomeration
  • slag properties
  • flash pyrolysis.

Characteristics of the drop tube furnace
Temperature in tube25-1,700°C
Pressure0.1MPa
Fuel dosing capacity0.5-500g.h-1
Particle size0.01-2mm
Gas flow rate0.5-20,000l.h-1

The gas phase composition can be adjusted to the required pyrolysis, combustion or gasification conditions.
