4 Occupational health aspects of pulverized fuel ash from co-combustion

The health and safety aspects of working with pulverized fuel ash are discussed in this report. Consideration is given only to pulverized fuel ash that originates from coal-fired power plants where secondary fuels, such as biomass, are co-combusted. Co-firing of secondary fuels can change the composition of such ashes. These changes can occur because:
  • the composition of the secondary fuels differs from the composition of coal
  • the behavior of elements during combustion differs
  • the speciation or chemical form of the elements changes.
