Flue gas desulphurization test facilities

FGD pilot plant, limestone reactivity

|

|
|
FGD pilot plant
This pilot plant is especially constructed for the research
& development program on flue gas desulphurization process
technology. The flue gas (150 mo3/h max.) is generated in a natural
gas fired boiler and SO2 is added from a cylinder, on
specification. The chemical species generally present in the
scrubber liquor of a FGD plant will also be added according to
specification. Various process parameters, like the circulation
flow (0-3000 l/h), can be adjusted and controlled over a wide
range. The scrubber is constructed of glass so that the spray
nozzles, the oxidation area and the sump are visible. Although the size of the FGD pilot plant is about 1/10,000
compared to a full scale FGD plant, it has been proved, that the
pilot plant is very well suitable to obtain results that can be
translated into full scale FGD practice.

Limestone reactivity
A special apparatus is available for testing the reactivity of
lime and limestone powders. The measurements are performed
according to the pH-stat method and the result is a dissolution
curve of the limestone. A computer model can be used to calculate
the influence of the application of alternative lime or limestone
compared to the lime or limestone, as already used during FGD plant
operations.
