Flue gas desulphurization
KEMA has a long history in flue gas cleaning and particularly in wet flue gas desulphurization (FGD). This is the result of KEMA’s position as the main engineer and R&D consultant of the Dutch Power Generating Companies, as well as the fact that flue gas desulphurization was introduced relatively early in the Netherlands. The first FGD unit at a coal-fired power plant was commissioned in 1985. Based on these experiences, KEMA has developed its services to all kinds of thermal processes for the conversion of fossil fuels, waste and biomass. KEMA’s activities in the flue gas cleaning area: - owner's representative or banker's engineer during the engineering and construction of FGD plants
- operational support to improve the efficiency of the plant, minimize the operational costs, improve the gypsum quality, optimize waste water treatment, et cetera
- maintenance support to improve the availability and to minimize the operational and maintenance costs
- Research & Development KEMA has performed comprehensive FGD research programs
- several FGD test facilities are available at the KEMA laboratories
- waste water treatment services.

Owner's representative & Banker's engineer
Services As an owner's engineer, KEMA has participated in many FGD construction projects at coal fired power plants, especially in the Netherlands and Poland. Comparable activities have been executed by order of waste incineration plants and, recently, biomass fired plants. The following services can be provided: - feasibility and design studies, pre-design
- tender activities, preparation of design specification documents
- evaluation of bids, selection of vendor, contract negotiations
- review of basic and detailed engineering
- project management
- quality control, construction supervision
- commissioning support
- performance and/or evaluation of guarantee measurements.

Operation support
Operation support For more than 15 years KEMA has been providing operational support activities in the field of flue gas cleaning systems in general, including FGD plants. These activities are offered at power stations, but also at waste incinerators and all kinds of industrial plants. Some of the activities involved are: - reduction of operational costs of FGD
- improvement of the SO2 removal efficiency
- improvement of the gypsum quality
- reduction of heavy metal discharge from waste water treatment (WWT) plants.

Maintenance support
Maintenance support KEMA has extensive and long-term experience in maintenance support in flue gas cleaning and flue gas desulphurization plants. This experience is based on a unique combination of laboratory experiments and practical knowledge, obtained during maintenance stops of many different FGD plants. Some examples of problems and activities KEMA can help you with: - corrosion of unprotected parts
- mechanical and chemical exposure of flake coatings and rubber linings
- inspection of flue gas fans, ducts and dampers
- inspection of pumps, linings and vessels.
KEMA's extensive knowledge of FGD’s is also based on experiences during inspections and quality control, as well during failure analyses. For more information please contact us.
