StopWaste.org, California
Municipal Green Building Design Assistance
KEMA provides green building technical and project assistance to all of the StopWaste.Org member agencies. About 20 public building projects per year receive services through the program, ranging from staff training to design charrettes, implementation strategies, and use of the LEED® Rating System.  One recent project, the Sankofa House transitional housing shelter in Berkeley, utilized KEMA's customized green building recommendations to incorporate a number of green building strategies in their design. The project included low-VOC paints, natural linoleum, daylighting, and formaldehyde-free insulation and cabinetry. Noise problems from adjacent railroad tracks were addressed in both the framing and HVAC plan. The project had a very limited budget, yet achieved substantial green building measures.

San Diego Regional Energy Office, California
Green Building Education and Technical Assistance
KEMA developed a presence for green building expertise in Southern California as the primary subcontractor on the Green Building Education and Technical Assistance Program (GBETA) run by the San Diego Regional Energy Office. The GBETA program was funded through the California Public Utilities Commission for the 2004-2005 program years. Elements included targeted trainings to the building community and local government officials. Basic, intermediate and advanced classes were offered in the San Diego Regional Energy Partnership territory. A second component of the program provided in-depth design assistance on projects seeking LEED certification.

City of Pleasanton, California
LEED Gold Fire Station
The City of Pleasanton hired KEMA to provide design assistance on their new Fire Station No. 4.  KEMA provided LEED charettes, helped identify shell and system strategies for energy, materials and cost savings, and kept a project scorecard current throughout the project design. The station features at least 20% solar power, super-efficient heating and cooling systems, extensive daylighting and natural ventilation, as well as natural linoleum and many other green materials.

City of Portland, Oregon
LEED Green Building Cost Study
KEMA collected data on an eight-story downtown office building, a fire station, and a police station and applied economic tests to identify the optional package of measures that would earn a LEED Certified rating for the least first cost. The study was then repeated to find the least life-cycle cost to the building owner, and again to find the least life-cycle cost from a regional perspective. This study served a key role in clarifying the City's economic basis for adopting a municipal LEED standard.

City of San Jose, California
LEED Certified Library Project and "San Jose LEED"
The City of San Jose hired KEMA to review the costs of constructing two new libraries to the LEED Version 2.0 Certified standard in order to provide information for planning later library projects and determining the goals of the City's evolving green building policy. After interpreting the data, KEMA advised the City on how to modify LEED to suit its local purposes. A description of the policy recommendations can be found in our paper published by Environmental Building News at the Austin GreenBuild Conference in 2002.
