KEMA Intelligence and Analysis Finds Many Utilities Starting to Develop AMI and Utility-of-the-Future Strategies
AMI or related SmartGrid initiatives have not been implemented on anything resembling a large scale in the United States to date. A significant number of U.S. electric utilities – including many of the industry’s major players – are aggressively taking a leap of faith towards developing AMI/Smart Grid strategies. As part of a comprehensive study, KEMA has examined why 14 utilities are moving in this direction, how these utilities plan to pay for these investments, which often cost hundreds of millions of dollars, and other critical decision points.

Use Cases Can Provide an Effective Roadmap Toward AMI Deployment
Although used in the software industry since the 1980s, the Use Case is a relatively new resource tool for specifying AMI system requirements, and standards related to Use Cases for this purpose have quickly developed. Put simply, AMI Use Cases specifically outline how utilities intend to implement and use nascent AMI technologies in their own developing infrastructure. The objective of the Use Case process is to provide a “road map” of where the utility wants to go.
