Will McNamara discusses meter data management integrataion, AMI/smart grid and more with Terry Mohn, a technology strategist and enterprise architect for the Sempra Energy utilities, representing San Diego Gas & Electric and Southern California Gas Company. He supports the utilities' technology strategy development and delivery by applying technology to business requirements. Terry focuses on company and industry smart grid, smart home and smart metering issues. He also represents the Sempra Energy utilities in major industry consortia, and currently serves as vice chairman of the GridWise Alliance.

Utility Experience Shows AMR Could Support Outage Management
The use of automated meter reading (AMR) as an integrated part of the emergency restoration solution is an exciting prospect that could allow utilities to more proactively address customer outages. Many of today’s advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) business cases are claiming a benefit for this enticing feature. However, first generation AMR solutions have presented unexpected results. This article will discuss results found in two utilities that have full AMR deployment. Before presenting those results, though, an explanation of the outage restoration process with and without AMR is in order.

When Is a Meter Not a Meter?
Not too many years ago, metering was mostly about measuring total usage over time. Many utilities self-generated and the need to know actual time of consumption to support transmission contracts, congestion, and high-priced generation was not a significant issue. Then the need to understand line losses, price variations, time-based purchase contracts, spot markets, and reliability led to more detailed metering for commercial and industrial (C&I) customers and the world of metering began its journey to where we find ourselves today.

- Xcel Energy is implementing the first fully integrated Smart Grid City in the US Boulder, Colorado.
- Arcadian Networks is partnering with FreeWave Technologies to enhance and diversify Arcadian’s existing wireless communications platform that serves energy utilities and companies with dispersed assets.
- Itron Inc. is delivering its Enterprise Edition (IEE) Meter Data Management (MDM) solution to support the high-volume data management needs associated with Pepco Holdings Inc.’s (PHI) AMI deployment.
- BPL Global Ltd. acquired Serveron, a transformer monitor technology provider that offers on-line transformer monitoring products as well as diagnostic services critical to improving grid reliability while optimizing the management and economics of their asset base.
- KEMA is actively supporting industry innovation as member of the GridWise Alliance (Alliance) and the GridWise Architecture Council (GWAC). KEMA recently joined the Alliance’s consortium of public and private stakeholders to create a more resilient, secure, and reliable national energy system.
