The Evolving Convergence of Distribution, Automation and Advanced Metering Infrastructure
The concept of Distribution Automation (DA) was introduced in the 1970s to use the latest technology computer and communications equipment to improve operating performance of distribution systems (sound familiar?). Since then, the growth of DA has been determined by the level of sophistication to be installed. Sometimes, unfortunate experiences occurred when too much “DA” was attempted all at once. Read more.

New Trends Emerging For AMI Cost Recovery
Based on findings from a study that KEMA conducted earlier this year, the average cost for an Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI)/Smart Grid utility project is approximately $775 million. While the costs of the project may be easy to quantify on the front end, the long-term benefits of technology improvements may not be as clear to regulators, particularly because the benefits may be spread over multiple customer classes and may not be fully realized for years. Demand Response Landscape Comprises Diverse Market
The various components of the Demand Response (DR) sector collectively constitute a multi-billion dollar market in terms of annual revenue potential. The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) subset of DR is the largest potential market in this space. Based on the announced plans of the largest 15 to 20 Investor Owned Utilities (IOUs) in the United States, KEMA estimates that about 40 million endpoints will become AMI-enabled over the next few years. At an average, all-inclusive cost of $150 to $250 for each AMI meter, the total range for the AMI market range would be $6 to $10 billion. To better understand the landscape of DR providers, KEMA recently conducted a market survey and analyzed prevailing trends. Over 40 companies directly involved in DR were examined across numerous DR factors. Direct interviews and surveys were conducted with many of these companies, supplemented by secondary research. Some of the findings are included in this article.
